Careers

We hire slowly, and keep people for a long time.

The bureau grows by one linguist at a time. If you translate into your mother tongue, in a field you have actually worked in, and you would rather raise a query than guess: we would like to read your application.

01Open roles

What we are recruiting for.

Every role is a staff position, not a place on a vendor list. Rates, hours and the terminology you inherit are all discussed before you are asked to translate anything.

  • Legal linguist

    DE → EN

Transaction documents and litigation bundles from German into English. A law degree or several years inside a firm matters more here than a translation qualification.

  • Reviser, life sciences

    EN → FR

Full bilingual revision of regulatory and clinical material into French. You will be reading against the source, line by line, and saying so when something is wrong.

  • Localisation engineer

    EN → ZH · JA

Owning the pipeline between our linguists and client repositories: formats, placeholders, pseudo-localisation and in-context review.

    Filled

2 roles are open. We also read speculative applications and keep the ones we cannot place yet.

02What we look for

Four things, and they are not negotiable.

  • Your mother tongue, and nothing elseWe do not ask anyone to translate out of their native language. It is the single clearest predictor of whether a text will read as though it was written rather than converted.
  • A field you have worked inNot a field you are interested in. We would rather hire a pharmacologist who translates than a translator who has read about pharmacology.
  • The instinct to askThe best test we have is a translation test with a deliberate ambiguity in it. What we are grading is whether you raise it. Candidates who resolve it silently do not get the job, however elegant the sentence.
  • Willingness to be revisedEvery text you produce will be read against the source by someone else, and you will revise theirs in turn. It only works between people who take the correction and not the offence.
03How hiring runs

Four stages, about three weeks.

Paid from the test onward. We are asking for your professional judgement, which is the thing you sell.

  1. 01

    Application

A CV and a short note on the fields you actually work in. No cover letter template: tell us what you have translated and for whom.

  2. 02

    Translation test

Around 400 words from a real domain, with a deliberate ambiguity in it. Paid at our standard rate whatever the outcome.

  3. 03

    Conversation

An hour with the lead linguist for your language, going through your test line by line. This is the stage that decides it.

  4. 04

    Trial project

One live file, fully revised as any other, with the reviser's comments shared with you in full.

Rates are published internally and are the same for everyone at the same level, in every country we hire in. We do not adjust pay to local cost of living: the work is worth what it is worth.
